GCast

Below you will find a link to GCast. If you listen to the Vocaroo Podcast in the post below, it will give an explanation. This is a sample of a Poetry Podcast I helped my son do on Audacity. A Poetry Podcast is a recording of an original poem with sound effects added. They are a lot of fun to make!!! Enjoy!

Meet Me At the Museum

Meet Me at Midnight” is an interactive online adventure that takes place in an animated Smithsonian American Art Museum. Intended for children aged 8 to 10, the site presents a perplexing scenario. An artwork—the dreaded Root Monster—comes alive and wreaks havoc in the galleries overnight. Visitors choose a friend—a character that has been separated from its artwork—to help aright the mixed-up museum and find its way back home. Every friend takes children on a vivid journey through the museum’s art collection, while imparting key concepts in American art.

Word Game

Like word games? Here's a fun one created by Webster's dictionary....

Alpha-bot
is the word-spelling robot and latest amazing word game for children at Merriam-Webster’s Word Central. Students simply click the Audio button to hear the word they need to spell. Then they shuffle through the letters, dragging and dropping and then double-clicking to lock them in place. Selecting the Check icon will allow students to see if they are correct.

Plus: Try Word Central’s other games too: in Robo-Bee, students control the flight of the Robo-Bee through a garden of synonyms, antonyms, spelling and usage puzzles; in BIGbot, with its hungry word-automated machines, students need to come prepared with a voracious vocabulary; and in the classic, long-time favorite Jumble Kids, students unscramble a list of words and then use the circled letters to unscramble the bonus solution.

Kid's can be SMART about ART

Admission is free at the Smart Museum, where your students will be welcomed by the smARTkids, four students of upper-elementary and middle-school age. When students click on the girl on the left, she takes them to meet an artist, visit a studio and see some great art. The boy next to her shows students different ways to look at art and how to tell a story using art. The art includes photography, sculpture, painting and other genres. The smARTkids site was developed by the Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, to help children—particularly those aged 7–12—discover ways to look at, think about and respond to art. Although some smARTkids activities are structured, most promote open-ended exploration of art. Visit the site with your students to learn the language of art, understand that artworks invite multiple interpretations and see how art is created for a wide variety of personal and social purposes. - From the TCEA Big Book of Technology Ideas

Open Wide, Look Inside

Here's another good find for a teacher resource...

Open Wide, Look Inside is a blog about teaching elementary math, science and social studies, with heavy emphasis on the integration of children’s literature across the curriculum. The blog is about throwing open the pages of books and using them to motivate and excite children about learning. The blog’s creator, Dr. Patricia Stohr-Hunt, is a professor of education at the University of Richmond. She is making this blog trip with her students, who are preparing to become elementary school teachers. From time to time, she also writes about useful Web sites and technology resources for enhancing instruction. - From the TCEA Big Book of Technology Ideas

Games to Play

Great site for free online games...  just in case you need something else to do on the internet.

Cool T-shirts

This is the best website I have found for ordering t-shirts and other unique items.  I entertained my students when I taught life science by wearing t-shirts about the subject of the day - a shirt with a labeled brain when we discussed the nervous system, a skeleton for the skeletal system, etc. - the kids thought I was imitating Tim from BrainPop's Tim & Moby.  I found this website and thought it was a lot of fun - especially if you like to read cheesy sayings on shirts.

Ever wonder how things are made?

If you have one of those curious kids in your house or are just a curious kid yourself - you will enjoy this website. It was created by Stanford University and it has short videos showing how common things - like jelly beans, glass, motorcycles, crayons, etc - are made. Interesting!?!

For those you who like to read and are looking for that great book to read by the pool, here's a website that has millions of suggestions - http://www.goodreads.com/

It's free to sign up. You can see what others have recommended, search through book reviews, get suggestions, or start your own on-line library to keep up with the book you have read.

Veterans Virtual Wall

With the 4th of July coming up and we are remembering those who fought for our independence, here's a website that is worth surfing - http://www.vvmf.org/index.cfm?SectionID=2.

"Through this interactive Web site, the healing power and emotional impact of The Wall now is extended to millions of more people through the Internet. For veterans, family, friends and others who are unable to travel to the nation's capital, the site offers an opportunity to remember and honor the more than 58,000 men and women whose names are inscribed on the Memorial."

My son, Jared made the U12 All Star team for baseball. The game was played last Wednesday at Bacchus. Jared was on the American League team. It was a great game - really cool to watch. Frisco Baseball did a great job!
